How to Watch IPTV on PC & Mac
Your IPTV subscription isn't limited to the TV. On a Windows PC or a Mac you can watch with VLC, IPTV Smarters, Kodi or Plex, from a 30-second setup to a full home media centre. Here is how each option works, step by step, and which one suits you.

Quick answer
The quickest way to watch IPTV on a computer is VLC: open Media › Open Network Stream and paste your M3U link. For a proper TV guide, use IPTV Smarters for Windows or macOS with your Xtream Codes login, or Kodi with the free PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on. Plex can show IPTV channels too, but it needs a Plex Pass and an extra tuner tool, so it suits enthusiasts.
Which option is right for you?
| Option | Setup time | TV guide | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| VLC | 1 minute | No | Quick viewing and testing a link |
| IPTV Smarters (Windows, macOS) | 5 minutes | Yes | Everyday watching with live TV, movies and series |
| Kodi | 10 minutes | Yes | A customizable media centre, or a PC connected to the TV |
| Plex | 30+ minutes | Yes | Plex users who want live channels beside their own library |
Watch IPTV with VLC
- 1
Install VLC
Download VLC media player from videolan.org, the official site. It is free and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
- 2
Open your playlist
On Windows choose Media › Open Network Stream; on a Mac choose File › Open Network. Paste your M3U link and click Play.
- 3
Switch channels
Open the playlist with View › Playlist (Ctrl+L on Windows) to see every channel, then double-click one to switch. The search box finds a channel quickly.
- 4
Smooth out playback
If streams stutter, raise the network cache: Tools › Preferences, select All under Show settings, open Input / Codecs and set Network caching to 3000 ms.
VLC is ideal for checking that a link works, but it has no guide grid and a very long channel list can be slow to scroll. For everyday use, one of the options below is more comfortable. Not sure which link to paste? See M3U vs Xtream Codes.
IPTV Smarters for Windows and Mac
IPTV Smarters offers desktop versions for Windows and macOS on its official website. After installing, choose the Xtream Codes login and enter your server URL, username and password. You get the same layout as on a phone or Fire TV: live TV with a guide, plus separate movie and series libraries. Our IPTV Smarters Pro guide covers the settings and fixes.
On Windows, MyIPTV Player from the Microsoft Store is another option that accepts an M3U link plus an EPG link. On a Mac, IINA plays M3U links much like VLC does.
Kodi with the PVR IPTV Simple Client
Kodi is a free, open-source media centre for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. Its official add-on, PVR IPTV Simple Client, turns an M3U link and an XMLTV guide into a full TV section with a guide grid.
- 1
Install Kodi
Download it from kodi.tv, the official site.
- 2
Install the add-on
Open Settings (the gear icon) › Add-ons › Install from repository › PVR clients › PVR IPTV Simple Client, and install it.
- 3
Add your playlist
Open the add-on's settings (in Kodi 20 and later, choose Add add-on configuration). Under General, set Location to Remote path and paste your M3U link.
- 4
Add the guide
Under the EPG settings, paste your provider's XMLTV link, then save.
- 5
Restart Kodi
Your channels appear under TV, and the guide fills in after a minute or two.
Install add-ons only from Kodi's official repository. Third-party "builds" and unofficial add-ons are a common source of malware and broken setups. If listings look wrong, the IPTV EPG guide explains time offsets and missing channels.
Plex Live TV & DVR (advanced)
Plex's Live TV feature is built for TV tuners such as an HDHomeRun antenna box, not for IPTV logins. To bring IPTV channels into Plex, people run a small proxy program, Threadfin being the best known (it replaced the older xTeVe), which presents your M3U link and XMLTV guide to Plex as if they were a tuner.
- Make sure you have a Plex Pass; Live TV & DVR requires it.
- Install Threadfin on the computer or server that runs Plex, add your M3U link and XMLTV guide in its web interface, and choose which channels to keep.
- In Plex, open Settings › Live TV & DVR › Set up Plex DVR, and enter the Threadfin address if Plex doesn't find a tuner automatically.
- Choose the XMLTV guide Threadfin provides and map the channels. They then appear in Live TV on every Plex app.
Each channel watched at the same time uses one of your IPTV connections, so if the family watches different channels through Plex at once, you'll need a plan with enough devices; see the plans.
Smooth playback on a computer
- Wired beats wireless: a laptop on Ethernet is noticeably steadier for live sports than the same laptop on busy Wi-Fi.
- Turn hardware decoding on: in VLC it is under Input / Codecs › Hardware-accelerated decoding (Automatic). Apple silicon Macs and recent Intel and AMD chips handle HD and 4K easily with it.
- Pause big downloads and cloud backups during a game; they compete for the same bandwidth.
- For the big screen, run the app on a TV device rather than casting a browser tab from the computer, which lowers quality and adds delay. The setup guide covers TV devices.
- Keep your login safe: don't type your details into unknown "web IPTV players"; stick to the apps above.
Still stuttering? The troubleshooting guide covers network and server causes.
