M3U vs Xtream Codes: IPTV Playlists Explained

When you subscribe to IPTV, your provider sends an M3U link, an Xtream Codes login, or both. They unlock exactly the same channels, but they behave differently inside your app. Here is what each one is, how to use it, and which to choose.

Quick answer

An M3U playlist is a single link (or file) that lists every channel and its stream address. An Xtream Codes login is a server URL plus a username and password that lets your app request live TV, movies, series and the TV guide in organized sections. Use Xtream Codes whenever your app supports it (TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro and most dedicated IPTV apps); use the M3U link for apps that only accept a playlist, such as VLC or Kodi.

What is an M3U playlist?

M3U is a plain-text playlist format that dates back to desktop music players. An IPTV M3U file is simply a long list: for each channel, one line describes it (name, logo, group and guide ID) and the next line gives the address of the stream. Your app reads it top to bottom and builds the channel list from it. One entry looks like this:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="CBC.Toronto.ca" tvg-logo="https://example.com/cbc.png" group-title="Canada | News",CBC Toronto
http://server.example.com:8080/live/username/password/1234.ts

group-title decides which folder the channel appears in, tvg-logo supplies the logo, and tvg-id links the channel to its listings in the TV guide. M3U8 is the same format saved as UTF-8 text, which is also the file type HLS streams use.

Providers usually give you the playlist as a link rather than a file, so it updates itself when channels change. It typically looks like http://server:port/get.php?username=…&password=…&type=m3u_plus&output=ts, where m3u_plus includes logos and groups, and output chooses MPEG-TS (ts) or HLS (m3u8) streams.

What is an Xtream Codes login?

An Xtream Codes login is three pieces of information: a server URL, a username and a password. Instead of downloading one giant list, your app talks to the server and asks for what it needs: the live TV categories, the movie and series libraries with posters and descriptions, the TV guide, and your account details such as the expiry date and how many connections you are using.

The name comes from the panel software that popularized this login method. That software is long gone, but its login format became the standard almost every IPTV app and provider uses today, which is why apps still show a button called "Xtream Codes API".

M3U vs Xtream Codes, side by side

Rule of thumb: if your app has an Xtream Codes option, use it. Keep the M3U link for VLC, Kodi and other apps that only accept a playlist.

Where the TV guide (EPG) comes from

Guide listings come in a format called XMLTV. With an Xtream Codes login, the app fetches it from the same server automatically. With an M3U link, many apps ask for a separate EPG link; from an IPTV provider it usually looks like http://server:port/xmltv.php?username=…&password=….

Each channel's tvg-id has to match an ID in the guide file, which is why one or two channels sometimes show "no information" while the rest are fine. Time zone matters too: listings are stored in one time zone and your app converts them, so a guide that is always an hour or three off usually needs the app's time offset adjusted. Our EPG guide and the post on fixing a guide that isn't working walk through it.

Keep your login private

Your M3U link and Xtream details are your subscription. Anyone who has them can stream on your account, which quickly pushes you past your connection limit and can get the line suspended. Don't share them, don't post screenshots of the login screen, and ask support to reset your password if you think they have leaked.

For the same reason, stay away from "free M3U playlists" posted online. They are shared or stolen logins that stop working without warning, are often bundled with phishing or malware, and carry channels redistributed without permission.

Common M3U and Xtream problems

  • "Playlist failed to load" or "invalid URL": the link was cut off when copied, the subscription expired, or the app needs http:// rather than https://. Copy the whole link again.
  • Login works but there is no guide: add or refresh the EPG link (M3U), or force a guide update in the app (Xtream).
  • "Max connections reached": more devices are streaming than your plan allows. Stop playback elsewhere, or move to a 2- or 3-device plan on the pricing page.
  • Symbols in the password: characters such as & or # can break an M3U link; the Xtream login avoids the problem.
  • Everything stopped at once: usually the subscription expired or the server address changed. Check your email and contact live support.

FAQ

Are M3U and Xtream Codes the same subscription?+

Yes. They are two ways of delivering the same channels from the same account. Your provider can usually give you both, and you can use different ones on different devices.

Which is better, M3U or Xtream Codes?+

Xtream Codes, whenever your app supports it: the guide, movies and series load automatically and the app can show your expiry date. M3U is the fallback for apps that only accept a playlist.

What is the difference between M3U and M3U8?+

M3U8 is an M3U playlist saved as UTF-8 text, so it handles accented and non-Latin characters correctly. The .m3u8 extension is also used by HLS streams, which is why you see it in stream addresses.

Why does my M3U playlist have no TV guide?+

An M3U link carries the channel list but not always the listings. Add your provider's XMLTV link in the app's EPG settings, or switch to the Xtream Codes login, which loads the guide automatically.

Can I use the same login on two devices at once?+

Only if your plan allows two simultaneous streams. You can install the login on any number of devices, but a 1-device plan plays on one at a time.

Is it safe to use free M3U playlists from the internet?+

No. They are usually shared or stolen logins that stop working without warning, they can expose you to phishing and malware, and the channels in them are typically redistributed without permission.
